What is Elongated Soft Palate?

Elongated Soft Palate (ESP) is a common condition in many pugs and is present from the moment of birth. ESP occurs when the soft pallet is too large, this leads to the obstruction of the pugs airways. A pug with a mild form of this condition may snore but more severe cases may gasp for air and have difficulty breathing.

What should I look out for?

  • Gagging
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Snoring
  • Vomiting
  • Heat stroke

What can I do to help my pug?

There are a few things you can do to help your pug with ESP.  Monitoring your pugs health and generally making sure it stays a healthy weight is key to ensuring it leads a healthy, happy life. Avoid extreme heat and try to reduce stress for your little puggy friend in any way possible. Surgery is also an option for pugs with more severe forms of ESP.
